BMW teases the upcoming M8 Concept Gran Coupe

Next week at the 2018 Geneva Motor Show, BMW will unveil the new M8 Concept Gran Coupe which previews the production car which goes on …

Next week at the 2018 Geneva Motor Show, BMW will unveil the new M8 Concept Gran Coupe which previews the production car which goes on sale next year. In a social media post published earlier today, BMW is giving us a closer look at what to expect next week.

The teaser image shows a four-door coupe in a typical concept form, which implies the lack of conventional door handles, large wheels and an aggressive stance.

The new BMW M8 Gran Coupe will join the M8 Coupe and M8 Convertible as the successors of the fans’ darling 6 Series family. In combination with a powerful powertrain, the BMW M8 Gran Coupe becomes a dream car that combines design, performance and everyday life in a fascinating package.

We can safely assume that under the hood it will feature the 4.4 liter V8 TwinTurbo engine currently used in the F90 M5, which will produce more than 600 horsepower.

It will also make use of the new ZF eight-speed automatic transmission which is likely to help the M8 Gran Coupe spring to 100 km/h from standstill in about 3 seconds.

F90 BMW M5 is not only the fastest but could be the best

Leading up to the new F90 BMW M5’s debut, the Bavarians wouldn’t stop blabbing about how it would be the fastest BMW of all time. …

Leading up to the new F90 BMW M5’s debut, the Bavarians wouldn’t stop blabbing about how it would be the fastest BMW of all time. And rightfully so, that is something to be proud of. So we knew that the BMW M5 was going to be fast before it was released. What we didn’t know was that it was going to be this fast.

Car and Driver recently tested the M5 on their own and recorded simply staggering results. When launched properly, by left-footing the brake and revving it to 3,000 rpm, which will allow the rear wheels to spin while keeping the fronts locked (sort of like the Mustang’s Line Lock), C&D recorded a 2.8 second 0-60 mph time. You read that properly, 2.8 seconds. I had to re-read that a few times as well, as that time puts the BMW M5 ahead of the Tesla Model S P90D, making it the fastest sedan they’ve ever tested. It’s also faster than the Audi R8 V10 Plus (2.9 seconds), Nissan GT-R (2.9 seconds) and the Mercedes-AMG GT R (also 2.9 seconds).

So the BMW M5 is seriously fast, as in bonafide supercar-fast. Which is something new for the M5. While it’s always been a fast car throughout the generations, the M5 has always been fast for a sedan. But the aforementioned cars it’s faster than are as follows; a mid-engine V10 supercar, the famous Godzilla and a track-focused weapon from AMG. The M5 is no longer fast for a sedan but fast for the entire industry. That’s impressive.

Even better than that, it’s finally great again. Not that the F10 M5 wasn’t a good car, but it wasn’t special. Technically impressive, sure, but it never gave you the fizz like M5s before it. This new one gets some of that fizz back. It has steering feel, communication through the chassis and an overwhelming sense of fun and enjoyment. It’s a proper BMW M car, like the ones we knew before. Of course, it will never be as scintillating as the E39 M5 but it’s closer to that car than it is to the F10 M5.

So when you combine those two traits, its ability to perform and feel like a proper M car while also having the outright performance capability of a modern, high-tech supercar, into one good looking, luxurious and cohesive package, you get something truly special. And what’s funny about that is the fact that the largest reason as to why this M5 is so great is its all-wheel drive system, the very thing enthusiasts complained most about prior to its release. This new BMW M5, with all of its aforementioned virtues, may just be the best M5 ever.

U.S. Army Begins Testing Tech to Enable Self-Driving Convoys This Summer

Beginning in June, the Army will road-test communications technology that could lead the way to autonomous big-rig convoys.

Beginning this June, the U.S. Army will conduct road tests of technology that promises to enable self-driving heavy truck convoys—though this summer's experiments will still put drivers behind the wheel.

Trucks.com reports that the Army will send at least four experimental vehicles out for testing along Interstate 69 in Michigan. The trucks will be equipped with advanced vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-infrastructure communications devices, meant to examine how future autonomous big-rigs in a convoy could communicate with one another, with other traffic, and with high-tech infrastructure equipment to sense traffic patterns, speed limits, road construction, and more.

Army spokesman Douglas Halleaux told Trucks.com that interstate testing of fully driverless, robotically controlled vehicles isn't far off. "It won't be in June, but it won't be long," he said.

The armed forces have a particular interest in developing autonomous heavy-duty trucks. "Army line-haul convoys currently require at least two personnel in each vehicle, not including escort or protection vehicles," Paul Rogers, director of the Army's Tank Automotive Research, Development and Engineering Center in Warren, MI, told Trucks.com. Removing soldiers from convoy duties could reduce the potential for battlefield casualties as well as those incurred in accidents outside of battle zones.

And autonomous convoy technology could have great benefits for the civilian trucking industry. Experts envision a future where a series of semi-autonomous smaller cargo trucks follows a lead truck (piloted either by a human or autonomously), able to handle bridge weight limits, tight turns, or narrow streets more nimbly than a single large truck. This could also alleviate the growing shortage of truck drivers, with as many as 48,000 unfilled openings for drivers as of the end of 2015.

The Army has been testing self-driving tech on military bases for several years: The photo above shows a convoy of driverless Army trucks navigating the Department of Energy's Savannah River Site in South Carolina in May of 2014. But with its first public-road tests set for this coming summer, the Army is ready to make its next advance on the self-driving future.

Ford’s Police Interceptors Get Serious Ballistic Body Armor

Strong words against crime, and good news for law enforcement came out of Ford World Headquarters in Dearborn, Michigan.

Ford police interceptors, such as the Explorer, Taurus and Fusion, are now available with U.S. Department of Justice standard Type IV protection against armor-piercing .30 caliber rifle ammunition. Which also makes them the only pursuit-rated police vehicles to offer such type of armor.

In case you’re wondering what the US Department of Justice standard is, here’s their very own description: “Type IV hard armor or plate inserts tested in a conditioned state with .30 caliber armor piercing (AP) bullets (U.S. Military designation M2 AP) with a specified mass of 10.8 g (166 gr) and a velocity of 878 m/s ± 9.1 m/s (2880 ft/s ± 30 ft/s).” Got that?

According to Ford, this solidifies the commitment that the American auto manufacturer has with law enforcement, and represents results of years of testing with the sole purpose of improving a type of vehicle that has been stagnant for decades (referring to police interceptors).

Besides the protection to common areas like doors, etc. Additional body panels with ballistic protection can be added if desired by the purchasing entity, which could cover the majority of the vehicle with the hopes of keeping its occupants safer.

2020 Ford Bronco Concept Designed By a Fan Forum Is Absolutely Perfect

Future Ford Bronco concept designed by the folks at Bronco6G.com hits all the right buttons

We are all rabid for a new, sixth-generation Ford Bronco. Rumor has it Ford is planning to build one by 2020. The automaker has been trolling Bronco fans for awhile now with teasers and winking hints. And whether you're a fan of the upright 1960s original or the early-'90s version of OJ Simpson fame, you're probably dying to see what a 21st-century Bronco looks like.

Well, we still haven't gotten a glimpse at what, if anything, Ford is planning for the Bronco nameplate. But that hasn't stopped the amazingly talented fans over at Bronco6G.com from taking matters into their own hands, rendering multiple versions of a concept 2020 Ford Broncothat absolutely nail what they, and we, want to see in a two-door 4x4.

"For our Bronco concept, we fused styling elements from previous Bronco generations, the 2004 Bronco concept, and modern Ford trucks and SUVs," Bronco6G.com administrator Tom told R&T in an email. "You can see the classic round headlights and square inset front grille evolved from the 1st gen Bronco, which was also showcased in the retro-futuristic 2004 Bronco concept."

"Our concept features a modern body-on-frame next-generation Bronco that retains a tall, boxy, tough, no-frills design with a strong focus on utility and off-road capabilities. We fitted separate versions with different grilles, wheel fender shapes, varying ride heights, and cargo rack for some different looks," Tom said.

Bronco6G.com intel says that the sixth-generation Bronco (for which the site is named) would most likely be built at Ford's Michigan Truck Plant in Wayne, Michigan, and that the automaker is benchmarking the Jeep Wrangler as its closest competitor.
We definitely dig what they've come up with. There's definitely some current Ford truck DNA in there—look at the shape of the windshield, clearly an F-150 piece—but the unadorned, slab-sided proportions and tidy, short-wheelbase layout is 100-percent Bronco.

The 300MPH Capable F80 Ferrari Will Shame All Other Hypercars

The Ferrari will be powered by a hybrid drivetrain that pairs a KERS system with a combustion engine and would produce 1200 hp. Thats some serious horsepower. I thin Ferrari is on to something here.

The iconic V12 would be replaced by a 900hp twin turbo V8 setup, which would be married with the 300hp KERS system. Theis ridiculous two-seater would zoom from 0 to 62 mph in only 2.2 seconds with a top speed of a whopping 310mph.
Still like you and many others I’d like to see it powered by a naturally aspirated V12 engine, but let’s not forget that the legendary Ferrari F40 was also powered by the same V8 power plant.

Ford-Powered Rhino GX is a Civilian MRAP

As mass shootings grow ever more present, don’t you think it’s time that the rest of the population is in up armored troop transports? But maybe more utilitarian and less militaristic? Well, look no further than U.S. Specialty Vehicles and their Rhino GX.
This is the same outfit that is already bringing back the Hummer HX concept from a few years ago using heavily modified Jeeps. Essentially, the Rhino GX is a Ford Super Duty that’s been effectively turned into an MRAP for civilian use.

The exterior is made from dual layers of 20-gauge steel and the interior is definitely, let’s just say interesting? The standard Rhino GX costs around $150,000, but after added a bunch of available options, you’re looking closer to $200,000. A bargain if you think the world is coming to an end in the coming weeks, but not exactly a normal grocery getter. In comparison, the MRAP costs $1,000,000 a piece, so on that note, it’s a hell of a deal.
What do you all think? Is this Ford Super Duty conversion ready for the inevitable zombie apocalypse?

And he tells us a little bit (a very little bit) about one of them, the Fisker Force 1

A bird's-eye view of Henrik Fisker;s drawning board, showing one of the two cars he will debut in Detroit. Fisker promises it'll be an American supercar.

Design icon Henrik Fisker, he of the Aston Martin DB9, BMW Z8 and his very own Fisker Karma, will debut two new cars at the Detroit auto show. He is only talking about one of them, though, and it looks like it’ll be a doozy  -- The Force 1 (yes, he capitalizes the “The”).
But when we say talking, it’s more like hinting. As you can gather from the design drawing attached here, the car will be a two-seat sports car/supercar. Fisker says it will be based on an existing front/mid-engine rear-drive American car, but he would not say which front/mid-engine rear-drive American car. If we had to guess, we’d guess Corvette.
“This high-performance automobile is an American take on a super sports car featuring powerful, dramatic sculptural exterior styling, Ultra Thin Ventilated (UTV) laser blade tail lamps and a luxurious contemporary interior for two people,” reads the press release. “The body on the limited edition auto is all carbon fiber sitting on 21-inch wheels with high performance Pirelli P Zero tires, controlled by a unique new active suspension.”
Clearly Fisker is a designer, because who else but a designer would point out the taillights and the 21-inch wheels before saying anything about the drivetrain? He did clarify that the drivetrain would have a powerplant that would be “…amongst the world’s highest output natural(ly) aspirated engine(s) in a road car, driven by the rear wheels either by a six-speed manual or optional paddle shift auto box.”
Pricing would be between $200,000 and $300,000 when the car starts its production run of "up to" 50 units, all built in Michigan.
So he’s putting a carbon fiber body of his own design on what, a Corvette? Maybe it’s those guys putting the Corvette engines into Fisker Karmas? He wouldn’t say. If you can think of any other possibilities, e-mail them to us.
Fisker did say that the suspension was designed by “…an acclaimed American race car driver.”
“I met and talked with an American racer, who still races, and he had developed an active suspension for a vehicle he’s racing, so we thought it’d be the right type of setup for us,” Fisker said when we caught up with him by phone as he himself raced between airports on his way to Detroit.
No details were spilled about that suspension nor even about the mysterious race car driver. Which, of course, led us to speculate wildly about that, too. Which active American Corvette racer also has engineering smarts? Let’s see, John Heinricy (retired in 2008), Ron Fellows (no, he’s Canadian), uh… Antonio Garcia (Spanish), Jan Magnussen (Danish, like Fisker, but maybe he got a green card or something?), Oliver Gavin (British), Tommy Milner? Hey, we know Milner. Milner, is it you?
But we’re also speculating that it is a Corvette racer, and it could be any American racer/engineer. And the racer isn’t the only one.
“There’s a couple more people involved in this venture whom you know very well,” said Fisker, though once again, adding nothing in the way of details.
But that’s how you build up suspense. Otherwise it’d just be another car lost in the Detroit River tidal wave of new cars. Very clever, Henrik.
“I’m trying to keep up the suspense and excitement,” Fisker said, just before hopping on his flight. “It’s exciting to see an American small car company in this market dominated by Europeans. You’re seeing traditional larger carmakers looking for this perfect all-around vehicle. We’re going to be a little more on the edge in luxury, style and power. It’ll be more radical.”
We’ll just have to wait another month to find out how radical and just how close our wild speculation was to the truth. But so far it sounds like a cool car.

Ford Truck Gets Ken Block-ified

After Ken Block’s highly successful Hoonicorn project, a project that saw a 1965 Ford Mustang get turned into an absolute monster, all-wheel drive lunatic with 845 horsepower. Many have wonder what Ken Block’s next Hoonicorn style build should be. We already know that Block will be using a Ford Escort in the next Gymkhana. But what should he use after that. It’s not too early to start speculating and creating rumors right?
What you see before you is a rendering done up by Khyzyl Saleem, a 22-year old artist that renders some pretty impressive concepts that we’d love to see brought to reality. His latest project is right up Block’s alley. Taking a sixth-generation Ford F-Series pickup truck, and then digitally grafting on a wide-body kit from a Toyota AE86 drift car, the pickup looks stunning. In fact, it looks ready to slay all tires in true Ken Block fashion.
Now if only it were real.

VW’s emissions scandal costs may force them to sell Bugatti, Lamborghini and Ducati

Faced with the possibility of astronomical costs due to the emissions fraud scandal, Volkswagen may have to consider downsizing their 12-brand empire built over the past two decades, which produces from cars to motorcycles to trucks. Bugatti, Lamborghini, and Ducati might be some of the “expendable” brands for not having such satisfactory profits.

Although in the past the German group could afford to sustain these superfluous assets, this money will now be needed to help cover the costs of their financial crisis.
“VW has several brands that fall into the ‘nice to have’ category,” said Stefan Bratzel, director of the Center of Automotive Management at the University of Applied Sciences in Bergisch Gladbach, Germany, estimating the scandal will cost VW as much as 30 billion euros ($34 billion). “Bugatti, Lamborghini, Ducati too — they’re not core to the company in terms of making money.”
Although VW did not yet disclose the specific financial figures of Lamborghini and Bugatti, neither contribute significantly to the final results of the group.
“Bugatti is among the most superfluous things in the Volkswagen Group,” said Frank Schwope, a Hanover, Germany-based analyst with NordLB. “It’s an image enhancer in good times, but in bad times like now, people are likely to point their finger at the brand wondering what VW seeks to achieve.”
In addition to these brands, analysts also point to the sale of Scania in Sweden or MAN in Germany, both of which are also struggling to show significant profits.
Last week, the automaker announced that it will recall 8.5 million diesel vehicles in Europe to rectify diesel engines affected by the fraudulent software. Chief Executive Officer Matthias Mueller says the scandal consequences will cost much more than the 6.5 billion euros that the automaker has already made available to cover the costs.

The Fenyr Supersport and Lykan Hypersport get a burly new brother.

The latest car craze is the luxury SUV. Bentley has one and soon it seems that Rolls-Royce,Lamborghini, and other automakers will either pimp out existing SUVs or give existing luxury sedans a growth spurt. Not wanting to be outdone, a small company named Zarooq has just announced plans to build its creation, a luxury rally racer called the Sand Racer. The proposed SUV coupe will have a 3.5-liter V6 engine pushing 305 horsepower, but owners with nerves of steel can opt for the burlier 400-horsepower or 500-horsepower options.

This is huge power for a 2,200-pound rear-wheel drive rally car that will draw comparisons to Napoleon with its 165-inch length. To sweeten the deal, the road-legal car comes with a six-speed paddle shifting automatic gearbox, air conditioning, a 124 mph top speed, carbon fiber interior trim, and “comfort seats.” Owners also have some bragging rights to share with their buddies at the hookah bar because the car was designed by Anthony Jannarelly, the same man who crafted the Lykan Hypersport and the Fenyr Supersport. Zarooq will debut the car in January of 2016 and it may start at upwards of $100,000.

Ford Mustang, F-150 and Focus are hottest at SEMA show

Historically Ford has always stole the stage at the Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) show. And this year it’s no surprise they have done it again.
Ford Mustang, Ford Focus and Ford F-Series are officially Hottest Car, Hottest Sport-Compact and Hottest Truck of this year’s SEMA show.
The SEMA award recognizes the most popular vehicles the organization’s members feature in their displays at the week long event. 2015 marks the first time any OEM has won three of the coveted awards.
Before this year’s show opened, SEMA officials walked the floor of the giant aftermarket expo and counted the number of new cars and trucks exhibited.
More Mustang, Focus and F-Series vehicles are on display than any other car or truck.
“Winning SEMA’s hottest vehicle awards for Mustang, Focus and F-Series is a great affirmation of the popularity of Ford vehicles with this trendsetting part of the market,” said Dave Pericak, director, Ford Performance, who accepted all of the honors at the annual awards breakfast.
“We’re proud the aftermarket has embraced these three vehicles with as much enthusiasm as our customers invest to personalize their Mustang, Focus and F-Series.”
Ford Focus won Hottest Sport-Compact of SEMA for the first time as the car’s popularity with the aftermarket grows. Mustang and F-Series each have multiple wins – a testament Ford says to the popularity and appeal of their vehicles.
Ford takes has the largest and most comprehensive venues at SEMA this year as the largest OEM presence with 28 unique SEMA builder cars featured on the Ford stand alone.
Additionally there are nearly 50 vehicles on display between the stand and the wildly popular Ford Out Front demo track.
Custom builds include six Ford Focus and Fiesta ST cars, seven Ford SUV models from Edge Sport and Explorer Sport, eight Ford Mustangs and seven Ford F-150 concepts.

The Gurkha is Here to Save You From the Apocalypse

According to Digital Trends, the Terradyne Gurkha RPV makes the “Hummer H1 look cuter than a Toyota Yaris,” and honestly, from the Gurkha’s exterior, we can’t argue with that. Like the original Hummer H1, the Gurkha is a civilian version of a military vehicle. It’s the ultimate go anywhere/flee from the zombie apocalypse type of vehicle.
Terradyne builds these trucks off a Ford F-550 chassis, and similarities between the Gurkha and the stock Ford end right then and there. The truck is armored from top to bottom and is able to move its bulky body through whatever terrain and through whatever type of firepower you might come up against. According to the company, the Gurkha’s body can withstand hours of AK-47 fire, .50 caliber sniper fire, and is blast protected from small explosives, which definitely makes it more durable than your average F-550.
The truck features a 6.7-liter V8 turbo diesel that makes 300 horsepower and 660 lb-ft of torque. It can fit up to 12 people, and has a fuel capacity of over 40 gallons, thus ensuring you have enough fuel to get you out of those sticky situations. The downside of such a vehicle? It weighs almost 10 tons and starts at $278,000. However, you do get the peace of mind that you can come up against any situation and laugh hysterically as you plow straight through it. I wonder how it would behave on Los Angeles’ 405 Freeway?

Drive Flashback: 1966 Ford Mustang by Bertone

That time a car magazine bought a Ford Mustang, shipped it to Italy, and had Bertone build them a custom to their exact specifications.

It's an everyday occurrence for an editor to commission a story. But for the editor and publisher of automobilia's answer to American Heritage to commission the construction of a car is, to borrow a phrase, a case of man bites dog. Yet this is exactly how the car on this month's cover came to be. Scott Bailey, the man who is Automobile Quarterly, pried a bright red fastback Mustang out of Dearborn, got Alitalia to fly it across the Atlantic, and commissioned Carrozzeria Bertone to rebody it.

As in any such commissioning, there were stipulations. There were to be no mechanical changes. Well, practically none. It was to be ready in time for the New York Automobile Show. (Like everybody else's exhibit, it was, but just barely.) And it was to be any color Nuccio chose as long as it was not the same color as when it left here. But that was it. No "It's got to be lower than the underside of a Fruehauf." No "I want a fastback just like Jayne Mansfield's Ferrari." No limits at all. Which makes Scott Bailey a good guy in any carrozzeria's eye.
